About The department

The department of Sociology started its journey in September 1985. This was the second department among Non-Government colleges under University of North Bengal to offer this subject. In the beginning sociology was offered at the pass/ general level. Subsequently Honours course was introduced in 1995. later, in 2009 the department along with the college, shifted under University of Gour Banga. The department of Sociology has a focus on socio- cultural-politico factors, impact of various agencies like family, peer group, mass media, educational institution of the development of personality & self , various social issues and problems etc so that the students can think rationally and create a healthy society.

We also hope that our students in particular will learn to identify how various social theories came into existence and how they are related to our society in reality. The students also learn from real life by visiting various areas and performing field projects by using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

The department offers both honors and general courses. There are two classrooms adjacent to the departmental teacher’s common room for teaching. At present the department has one computer with internet facilities. The seminar library is also there to help the students with books and the department is still working for the betterment and availability of more books and journals.
