About The Institution

Established on the 5th day of September 1985, Gour Mahavidyalaya stands proudly on the north side of the majestic Mahananda River, where the National Highway 34 gracefully passes through the picturesque locales of Mangalbari, Old Malda. Our institution embarked on its journey with a noble vision – to cater to the educational needs of the people, primarily focusing on the district and the surrounding locality.

About The Department

The Department of Education laid its foundation in the year 1985 with the capacity of 28 students. The Department initially took immense care in catering its service to the weaker section within the District as well as the students from other Districts. At the initial level in 1985, the subject Education was offered as a General course and later during 1995 the course broadened its program to Honours course. With the introduction of NEP 2020, the additional course such as Major and Minor have been introduced in the Department from 2023-2024 sessions. Our department takes pride in its dedication to offering high-quality education, and our distinguished faculty members are at the heart of our success. We are glad to present you to our team, which includes two committed full-time teachers and three SACT teachers. The Department has its own “Educare” Club which tries to enlighten students by conducting different student centric program. Besides this, the Department, in collaboration with IQAC, organizes different seminar, webinar, educational movie screening and special lecture for the benefit and overall development of the students. The Department initially was under the supervision of the University of North Bengal and later from 2009 onwards the Department came under Gour Banga University. The Department follows and updates the syllabus as prescribed by the University.


The Department is located on the ground floor of Arts Building, adjacent to Rabindra Bharati Distance Education Department. The classes are conducted in three rooms as room no. 108,109 and 110. At present there is a computer, printer and scanner facilities within the department. There is a Departmental library in the Department and for the use of better variation of books the students are made to frequently visit the college library.

Vision

  • Conduct National and International Seminar, Webinar and Workshop in collaboration with I.Q.A.C. and M.O.U. signed colleges and Universities.
  • Conduct interactive classes through PPT and audio visual medium.
  • Conduct the Faculty Exchange classes with M.O.U. signed Colleges and Universities.
  • Invite the Successful Alumni students and conducting the classes or motivational classes so that they can be in touch with the Department.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive educational ecosystem that recognizes and celebrates diversity.
  • Lead the students in educational research and advancements to stay at the forefront of pedagogical innovation.
  • Remedial classes for Advanced- Slow learner.
  • Specific problem solving, updation by Mentor-Mentee Meeting.
  • Empowering students with technological skills and accessing digital sources of Knowledge.
  • Empower students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for active participation in a globalized and interconnected world.
  • Cultivate a gender bias free environment in the Department.
  • Participation of Students in several Departmental Cultural Programme and activities i.e., Student Seminar, Quiz, Discussion and Celebration of the Day related to renowned personalities, day having national importance.
  • Supporting students by providing books from the Departmental Library.

Department Rules

  • As per G.B.U regulations students are required to attend 75% of the lectures and tutorials before appearing for university examinations.
  • Students must inform the H.O.D. in written form with parent’s signature on it, in case of continuous absence in the class for more than 7 consecutive days.
  • Students are also required to pass the college periodicals examinations as a condition for being presented for the university examination.
  • Compulsory attendance on the first and last day of every session, including holidays is necessary.
  • Departmental books can be issued from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.from Monday to Saturday.
  • Books lost, defaced or damaged in any way shall have to be replaced by the borrowers.
  • Books are not to be taken out of the Department without issuing .
  • Students have to submit the borrowed books within one week and if needed they can reissue it.
  • Appearing in Class-Test, college Selection Test is mandatory.
  • Students have to participate in the various events of the Department like exhibition, class seminar, special lecture etc.
  • Students are requested to keep their classroom and college surrounding clean and make a habit to switch off the light and Fan after finishing the class.

Welcome to the Department of Education

Education is not just about going to formal institution and learning a Reading, a Riding (Writing) and a Arithmetic ( Arithmetic) but it is beyond that. It has the capacity to change the society and the world as a whole. With this belief, the Department of Education, Gour Mahavidyalaya  laid its foundation in the year 1985 with the capacity of 28 students. The Department initially took immense care in catering its service to the weaker section within the District as well as the students from other Districts. At the initial level in 1985 the subject Education was offered as a General course and later during 1995 the course broadened its program to Honours course. At present the Department has one Assistant Professor and three Guest Lecturer.


Education as a subject is very much related to human being as a whole from cradle to the grave. It allows and helps to understand how human being develop and learn over their lifetime. Thus this subjects has a range of subject disciplines such as Philosophy, Psychology, sociology, Pedagogy, Educational commissions, Educational Measurement And Technology, Guidance And Counselling, Great Educators etc. Therefore after the 3 years course of this subject, the student would gain a broad and practical understanding of all the philosophical, societal, cultural, historical, knowledge of Educational processes, Educational system and Approaches and above all the psychology of human behaviour.


For the partial fulfilment of the three years undergraduate course the students in their third year are made to involve in various activities like preparation and execution of lesson plan, surveying the locality in regard to sanitation and nutrition, adult literacy campaign, visiting kindergarten school and an excursion program related with the subject. Some of the practices of the Department are as follows:-

  • Interactive class through PPT and audio visual medium.
  • Special lecture by renowned teachers of other Colleges and Universities.
  • Special lecture by faculties of different Department of the college itself.
  • Practical experience and understanding of the subject through school visit, field visit and educational tour.
  • Department also organise student classroom seminar, Annual Departmental Exhibition, project work, and conduct monthly class test.
  • Department also provide books to the student from Departmental Library, Xerox and Printing facilities.
  • Department also use social media like whatsapp for student teacher communication.
