About The department
The Department of Botany at Gour Mahavidyalaya was established in 2004 with the introduction of the Undergraduate General Course in Botany. Since its foundation, the department has been committed to offer high-quality education in plant science promoting scientific awareness among students. In 2011, the department expanded its academic offerings by establishing the Undergraduate Honours Course under traditional 1+1+1 system.
Keeping pace with the evolving higher education framework, the department implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from 2019 to 2022, providing students with additional freedom and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Since 2022, the department has been functioning under the National Education Policy (NEP-2022), which focuses on holistic, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented education.

A dedicated Hydrophytes Conservation Pond supports the preservation and study of aquatic plants, offering students practical exposure to wetland ecosystems and plant adaptation.
The department also possesses an Arboretum with diverse tree species that serves as a living repository for botanical study, ecological observation, and environmental education. In addition, the Vermicompost Production Unit encourages eco-friendly waste management and organic farming practices, helping students understand sustainable agricultural techniques and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Over time, the Department of Botany has grown into a thriving academic unit with devoted faculty, well-equipped laboratories, and a focus on both theoretical and practical learning. The department’s goal is to develop students’ scientific temperament, environmental awareness, and research enthusiasm, preparing them for higher education and a variety of employment prospects in biological sciences. Student Mentoring System to help them academically and in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Faculties cater to the needs of Slow Learners and Advanced learners by continuous evaluation through Online MCQ, Class tests, Quizzes, Assignments, etc. Faculty members arrange curriculum based Field Visits for both the Major and Minor students.
